History in brief
In the the 15th century, the city of Vijayanagara (Hampi's old name) was founded as the capital of the vast and powerful Vijayanagara Hindu empire. Over the next 200 years, nearly 500 monuments were built. In the 16th century, the Mughal invaders destroyed the structures, leaving them in ruins.

The vast archeological site covers 26 square kilometers (10 square miles) and is heavily sprinkled with colossal boulders.
