Horyu-ji Temple

Several of the world's oldest surviving wooden buildings reside in this renowned Buddhist site in Ikaruga (near Nara and Kyoto). They date back to the 7th century.
Top 3 Horyu-ji Temple attractions
Kondo (main hall)
It's home to the esteemed Shaka Triad. Regrettably, a 1949 work-project fire destroyed many precious ancient wall paintings. They had to be replaced with reproductions.
Goju-n-tou> (five-story pagoda)
This wooden structure is photogenic. It stands as high as a modern 10-story building, which is remarkable considering that the pagoda was built 1,300 years ago.
Yumedono (hall of dreams)
This octagonal structure (see photo above) houses the famous 7th-century Guze Kannon statue. It's on public view for only about 30 days in the spring and then again in the fall.
