Beefeaters
For centuries the Yeoman Wardens helped guard the Tower of London. Today, they are popularly known as the Beefeaters and conduct knowledgeable and entertaining tours. Their uniforms are eye-catching (see photo)

Crown Jewels
The Tower of London is home to the Crown Jewels of Great Britain. The collection includes the sovereign crown and a scepter adorned with an immense diamond.

Armory and weaponry from olden days are also on display.

Function
The Tower of London has served many purposes, including as a citadel, royal residence, government seat, and prison.

Infamous royal events
Kings and queens were imprisoned and, sometimes, executed here. They include two wives of Henry VIII who were beheaded. One King (Richard III) gained the throne when he incarcerated and (reputedly) ordered the murder of his nephew, the 13-year-old King Edward V, in the Tower of London.

Construction
The square castle keep (see photo on page one) was built nearly 1,000 years ago by William the Conqueror. Subsequent rulers enlarged the building and wall complex.
